The visual effects and animation industries continue to navigate a turbulent period, with major studios facing financial uncertainty. While Technicolor Group searches for stability, Cinesite—known for its work on Aquaman, The Witcher, No Time to Die, The Smurfs Movie, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever—is now facing serious financial difficulties.
Cinesite Closing? : Mounting Debt and Industry Challenges
According to The Times, Cinesite reported a deficit last year, with losses totaling approximately €28 million ($29 million). The primary cause: the 2023 Hollywood strikes, which led to widespread project cancellations and postponements, severely impacting revenue.
Further exacerbating the situation, Cinesite invested heavily in AI and machine learning, securing loans to expand in these areas. As a result, the studio now carries an estimated €134 million ($140 million) in debt. Cinesite declined to comment on these reports when approached by The Times.
Multiple Studios Impacted
Cinesite operates across multiple locations, including London, Vancouver, and Montreal, and owns several affiliated studios such as Trixter, Image Engine, Squeeze, L’Atelier Animation, Assemblage, Fx3x, and Imaginarium Studios.
Many of these divisions, particularly those in Quebec, have been affected by recent changes to the province’s tax credit policies. These reforms have led to a significant downturn in the local VFX and animation industry, as tax incentives play a crucial role in attracting Hollywood projects.
Additionally, Cinesite’s reliance on VFX-intensive streaming series has become a vulnerability. The studio has contributed to productions like The Witcher and Foundation, but streaming platforms have shifted from aggressive expansion to profitability-driven strategies, reducing investment in new content.
Future Uncertain
It remains to be seen whether Cinesite Closing or Cinesite can navigate this financial crisis and whether a potential industry recovery will offer relief. We will continue to monitor the situation closely.
